02/24/2018 (Thailand) - Between Friday, 23 and Saturday, 24 February, there were several reports of suspected arson and attacks on military personnel in Narathiwat and Pattani provinces. In the early hours of Saturday, firefighters and more than 20 firetrucks were deployed to two fire-gutted areas where two shops and a department store were severely damaged on Rangae-Makkha Road and Chamroonnapha Road in Muang district of Narathiwat. No casualties resulted from the incidents, which police claim to be acts of arson. On Friday night, a string of shooting attacks targeting security officers and the burning of used car tyres were reported in five districts in neighbouring Pattani province. In Mai Kaen district, an unknown number of attackers ambushed a security team providing protection to local residents in the Talor Kraithong area, whilst outposts in Sai Buri, Muang and Kapho districts came under heavy gunfire. In Mayo district near Langa the Pattani-Narathiwat Road was blocked by burning tyres.

Those in Pattani and Narathiwat provinces should monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and any associated security operations. Travellers in southern Thailand are advised to maintain good situational awareness at all times and subject all overland travel to comprehensive security risk management protocols. Any suspicious items or activity should be immediately reported to security forces.
