02/24/2018 (Somalia) - Protests have erupted in Afgoye, Lower Shabelle region, on Saturday, 24 February, following the death of a well-known local resident. Unconfirmed social media reports indicate that residents have gathered to protest against government forces after the man was allegedly shot by a Somali soldier. The man was reportedly struck by a stray bullet when heavy gunfire broke out between Somali government troops and Al-Shabaab fighters in the town. Investigations into the incident are currently underway and there is a heavy security presence in the town as communal tensions remain high.

Travellers in the Lower Shabelle region should anticipate further unrest and an increased security presence in the Afgoye area in the immediate term. Travellers are reminded that Somalia is considered an extreme risk operational environment and, as such, all travel should be undertaken with the strictest possible risk management protocols in place. All operationally-critical movement outside of secure compounds should be conducted in coordination with a reputable security provider and local authorities.
