02/24/2018 (India) - At least nine school children were killed and another 20 sustained injuries after they were hit by a speeding vehicle on Saturday, 24 February, in Muzaffarpur, Bihar State. The children were waiting to cross the road when they were hit by the vehicle, which was reportedly fleeing a hit-and-run incident nearby. The vehicle overturned upon collision and the driver fled the scene. A search has been initiated by local police.

The incident highlights the high risk of road accidents in India. Vehicular accidents are relatively frequent in the country due to inadequate road maintenance in rural areas, poor driver discipline and limited enforcement of traffic rules. Those intending to conduct overland travel in India are advised to ensure that they utilise the services of a reputable service provider, checking safety standards and vehicle serviceability.
