02/24/2018 (Central African Republic) - Clashes erupted in the PK5 District of Bangui on Friday, 23 February, following a disagreement between local vigilante groups concerning a market space. At least three people were killed and another eight sustained injuries after a local militia attempted to close the market after local vendors refused to pay a "protection fee". Several armed groups reside in the district and have long been accused of extortion and violence against shopkeepers and the local population.

Those in Bangui are advised to minimise non-essential travel in the PK5 district and surrounding areas due to the persistent instability and risk of exposure to incidental violence. Travellers should be aware that the Central African Republic remains a high-risk operational environment and should regularly review security management protocols to ensure they remain commensurate to the prevailing local threat environment.
