02/23/2018 (New Zealand) - Following cyclone Gita's landfall in the north of South Island, rail lines and the State Highway 1 along the Kaikoura Coast have been closed for clear-up operations that will last until approximately Friday, 2 March. A state of emergency was declared a few days ago in Christchurch, Nelson Tasman, Selwynn, Westland in South Island and New Plymouth in North Island, in light of the weather forecasts, however, reports indicate that weather conditions were better than initially expected.

Travellers in the area should remain apprised of areas and transportation routes affected by the recovery operations held after the passage of Cyclone Gita. Drivers should exercise a heightened degree of caution in flood-affected areas due to likely hazardous conditions caused by flooding, landslides and debris.
