02/23/2018 (Sudan) - Local media sources report on Friday, 23 February, that at least 36 people have been killed and more than 20 other have been wounded following a cattle raid against the Misseriya Community in the northern Abu Kadma area of South Kordofan state. It is indicated that 3,000 heads of cattle were stolen in the raid which occurred on Sunday. Soldiers crossing the border from South Sudan's Ruweng state are suspected of perpetrating the attack, however this has been denied by South Sudanese authorities. The Misseriya tribe has, however, traditionally clashed with the Dinka Ngok tribe from the Abyei area over cattle-grazing areas and water sources.
Travellers should monitor local media sources and liaise with in-country contacts for further updates on the situation in their particular area of operations and heed any directives issued by authorities. Travellers are advised to exercise caution when travelling outside of Khartoum due to the high risk of violent crime and military activity. All operationally-critical travel should be conducted in coordination with a trusted security provider following a comprehensive localised threat assessment.
