02/22/2018 (Bangladesh) - The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced a protest march in Dhaka on Saturday, 24 February, against the imprisonment of its chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Mass scale attendance is expected and severe travel disruption is likely. Zia was sentenced to five years in jail for embezzlement on 8 January, 2018.

Those in Dhaka should monitor local media sources to remain apprised of the protest route and adjust their itineraries accordingly. Travellers are advised to avoid the vicinity of all political gatherings due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence. Travellers should be aware that protests in Bangladesh have the potential to become violent with little warning, often attracting a heavy-handed response from government forces.
