Al Shabaab Militants Ambush AMISOM Convoy in Afgoye District, Lower Shabelle Region

02/22/2018 (Somalia) - According to local media sources on Thursday, 22 February, a convoy carrying troops from the African Union Mission In Somalia (AMISOM) has been attacked in the Afgoye district of Lower Shabelle region. Initial reports indicate that the attack was carried out by militants from the Al-Shabaab group as the convoy travelled from Afgoye and Bal'ad district.

Travellers should be aware that Somalia is considered an extreme risk operational environment and, as such, all travel should be undertaken with the strictest possible journey management protocols in place. Clients should ensure that personnel and site security measures are continuously reviewed so as to remain commensurate with the prevailing local threat environment. All operationally-critical movement outside of secure compounds should be conducted in coordination with a reputable security provider in coordination with security forces and local authorities.
