02/22/2018 (Indonesia) - According to local media sources on Thursday, 22 February, The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has issued forest fire alerts for South Sumatra, Riau, West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan. The warnings come after the BNPB identified multiple hotspots nationwide through satellite imagery, with a dozen high category spots located in the aforementioned provinces. A state of emergency was issued for Riau province after a forest fire had spread to 633 hectares (1560 acres) of the province, with comprehensive fire-fighting efforts being deployed. Riau, West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan are reportedly entering the first period of the dry season, which can exacerbate the risk of forest fires.

Clients in the aforementioned provinces are advised to remain alert to any directives issued by authorities and familiarise themselves with evacuation protocols for their surrounding communities. Those in Riau and areas affected by the fire are advised to boil their tap water for drinking and cooking as running water can cause intestinal illness at this time. Furthermore, travellers should avoid outdoor activities due to poor air quality caused by the fire and heat, and anticipate localised travel disruptions as a result of ongoing emergency response operations and road closures.
