Chemical Fire reported at Ichemco Factory in Cuggiono, Milan

02/22/2018 (Italy) - According to local media reports on Thursday, 22 February, a fire has broken out at a chemical factory on the outskirts of Milan. The incident occurred at the factory of Ichemco, a chemical company based in Cuggiono, 50km (31 miles) west of central Milan. At least one person has been injured. Initial reports indicate that a large explosion was heard in an area of the factory where solvents are processed. Firefighters are working to contain the fire, and large plumes of smoke have been reported in the vicinity of the site.


Travellers in Milan are advised to avoid non-essential travel to Cuggiono and the surrounding area in the immediate term. Those in the vicinity of the factory are advised to remain indoors, keeping windows and doors closed in order to limit exposure to harmful fumes. Travellers should anticipate road closures and localised delays as a result of emergency response operations and should seek alternative routes where possible. Travellers should heed any directives issued by local authorities.
