02/21/2018 (Maldives) - According to international media sources on Tuesday, 20 February, the Parliament has approved a 30-day extension of the current state of emergency called on Monday, 5 February amid tensions between President Yameen Abdul Gayoom and the Supreme Court. Several countries and the United Nations have called on the government to lift the emergency and to restore normalcy to the country. Tour operators say that hundreds of hotel booking have been cancelled since the original state of emergency began.

Travellers in Male and other urban centres are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of all demonstrations and political gatherings in order to limit exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence, as well as a heavy-handed police response. Clients are further advised to be wary of a heightened police presence in urban centres during protests and should heed any directives issued by authorities. Monitor local media sources for updates on planned protests.
