Kidnapped NGO Worker Freed in North Kivu Province

02/21/2018 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - According to international media reports on Tuesday, 20 February, an aid worker who was kidnapped at the weekend in North Kivu province has been released. The man, who works for the Hydraulique san Frontiers (HYFRO), a non-government organisation (NGO) that specialises in water purification projects, was taken hostage near to the village of Mushkiri with three other colleagues on Saturday, 17 February. Two of the man's colleagues were killed by the kidnappers and the third managed to escape.

To reduce the risk of kidnapping, clients in the DRC should maintain a low profile; keep itineraries discreet; vary travel routines, including routes, timings and vehicles; and report any suspicious persons or activities to relevant officials as soon as possible. Other security precautions include installing GPS tracking software on cell phones and in vehicles, and alarm systems and 24-hour guard service at their homes and workplaces.
