State of Emergency Declared as Forest Fires Spread in Riau Province

02/21/2018 (Indonesia) - According to international media sources on Wednesday, 21 February, the Riau provincial government has declared a state of emergency after forest fires spread across the province. The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (RDMA) announced that the fires had affected a total of 633 hectares (1560 acres) of the province. Reports state that some urban areas such as Rokan Hilir, Dumai, Bengkalis, Kepulauan Meranti, Siak and Kampar have been affected, but that Pekanbaru has not yet been seriously damaged by the fires. The Forest and Land Fire Task Force is currently deployed to battle the blaze and is utilising a Super Puma helicopter to assist in fighting the fires.

Those in the affected area are advised to closely monitor local media sources for further fire-related updates and should heed any directives issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Travellers should anticipate significant travel disruption in the area while firefighting operations are underway. Clients are advised to avoid the vicinity, keep medication close by if suffering from respiratory conditions and continue to monitor local media sources for evacuation orders and related updates.
