02/21/2018 (India) - According to local media reports from Tuesday, 20 February, a candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has escaped a suspected assassination bid. Reports suggest militants ambushed Mmhonlumo Kikon's convoy near Yimpang village, Nagaland, first attacking with machetes and then gunfire. The candidate was reportedly unhurt, but three of his entourage were seriously injured and two vehicles damaged. The Nagaland legislative assembly election is slated to take place on 27 February.

Travellers should monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and observe any extraordinary security measures which may be implemented, including curfews. In the run-up to the elections, travellers should exercise increased caution due to the increased risk of politically-motivated violence and militancy.
