02/21/2018 (China) - According to local media sources on Wednesday, 21 February, ten people have been killed after a bus skidded off a road and plunged down a slope in Jiangxi province. The incident occurred on Tuesday, 20 February in Ganzhou, with the bus carrying 32 passengers when it had a capacity of only 19. The bus was apparently overcrowded due to a travel rush during the Lunar New Year holidays. Police are looking into the causes of the accident and have advised bus drivers not to exceed passenger limits.

Overland travel poses a multitude of risks in China. Traffic is often chaotic, aggressive and road signs are generally treated as arbitrary guidelines and are often ignored. Transport vehicles are often overloaded or operated by poorly trained drivers. Self-driving is not recommended for those unfamiliar with roads and driving conditions. Road conditions on rural routes may be unpaved or otherwise in poor condition. Travellers are advised to secure the services of reputable private transportation agencies and ensure that all safety precautions are in place prior to departure.
