02/21/2018 (Sri Lanka) - According to local media sources on Wednesday, 21 February, at least 19 people, including 12 military personnel, have been injured in a suspected grenade attack against a bus near Diyatalawa, Uva Province. Initial reports suggested that an explosive substance aboard the bus has combusted, with secondary investigations confirming the blast was caused by a grenade. The bus was privately operated and was travelling from northern Jaffna peninsula to the central town of Diyathalawa, where one of the main military training centres is located.

Those in country are advised to exercise a heightened level of vigilance when travelling and immediately report any suspicious activity to police. Attacks against military personnel have been sparse since the end of Sri Lanka's nearly three-decade civil war in 2009. Based on previous activity, high-level state officials, government buildings, political rallies, symbols of economic success, security installations and personnel, public transportation and critical infrastructure are considered the most at-risk targets for terrorist attacks.
