02/21/2018 (Mozambique) - According to local media reports, residents of the Albasine neighbourhood in Chiango blocked the Maputo Ring Road on Wednesday, 21 February, amid protests regarding recent floods in the area. Residents are protesting the lack of intervention by authorities following the flooding of their homes and damage to local infrastructure. Municipal Police officers have reportedly cleared the barricades and dispersed the demonstrations. Tensions are likely to remain high in the area and further unrest is probable.
Clients in Chiango are advised to avoid the Maputo Ring Road and surrounding area due to potential unrest and further travel disruption. Travellers should remain clear of all political demonstrations in order to limit exposure to unruly crowd behaviour, opportunistic crime, and heavy-handed police response. Personnel are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the event and any associated disruption in their particular area of operations.
