02/20/2018 (Iraq) - According to international media reports on Monday, 19 February, an ambush by militants from Islamic State (IS) has killed at least 27 pro-government militia fighters. The ambush reportedly occurred near the northern city of Kirkuk late on the evening of Sunday, 18 February. Reports suggest that the IS militants had disguised themselves in police uniforms to carry out the attack. The government declared victory over IS in December of 2017, but the group continues to carry out attacks across the country.

Travellers should be aware that Iraq, particularly the Kirkuk area, remains a high-risk operational environment due to persistent militant activity. Travellers are advised to ensure that all movements are subject to strict security risk management protocols following a localised threat assessment. Any suspicious items or activity should be immediately reported to security forces.
