02/19/2018 (Philippines) - According to local media reports on Monday, 19 February, at least five soldiers have been wounded in an attack on a military vehicle in Datu Unsay, Maguindanao province. An improvised explosive device (IED) reportedly hit the vehicle in an attack blamed on the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), which claims to have links to Islamic State (IS). The attack is suspected to be in retaliation for an ongoing military offensive against BIFF which began in August 2017.

Travellers should immediately report any suspicious objects to police or security forces. Numerous militant and separatist militia groups operate in Maguindanao and any operationally-critical travel to the region should be subject to a thorough localised threat assessment and extensive security risk management procedures. Travellers should monitor local media sources to remain apprised of any security-related incidents in their particular area of operations and heed any directives issued by local authorities.
