02/19/2018 (Nigeria) - According to local media reports on Monday, 19 February, local businesses in central Calabar, Cross River State, are to close for a week beginning today, in protest over a perceived lack of action by city authorities against a recent spate of kidnappings. Last week six local businessmen are thought to have been captured within 48 hours in an attempt by local gangs to extort money. As a result public services and city transport links are likely to be disrupted throughout this time.
Those reliant on local shops and public services in Calabar should stay abreast of the latest related developments, as well as review contingency measures to minimise potential disruption to business continuity. To reduce the risk of kidnapping, clients in Nigeria should maintain a low profile; keep itineraries discreet; vary travel routines, including routes, timings and vehicles; and report any suspicious persons or activities to relevant officials as soon as possible. Other security precautions include installing GPS tracking software on cell phones and in vehicles, and alarm systems and 24-hour guard service at their homes and workplaces.
