Ongoing Violent Student Protests in Conakry

02/19/2018 (Guinea) - According to local media sources on Monday, 19 February, dozens of students are demonstrating for the resumption of classes in the Lansanayah area of the Matoto prefecture located in the Conakry region. Reports indicate that some of the students are throwing stones at passers-by. Local traders in the market area of Lansanaya have been forced to abandon their stalls and take cover. Road traffic has also been disrupted by the demonstration. It is not yet clear if there has been any injuries or fatalities.

Those in Conakry should avoid the Lansanayah area due to ongoing violence and the likelihood of a heavy-handed security response and should monitor local media sources for any further information. Travellers in a country are advised to remain alert to any directives issued by authorities including road closures and curfews.
