02/19/2018 (Tanzania) - According to local media reports on Monday, 19 February, police officers have surrounded the Civic United Front headquarters in Ungunja, Zanzibar over the last 24 hours due to 'security concerns'. A spokesperson from the party has since announced that they fear the police plan to forcefully occupy the office and/or arrest party leaders. The stand-off follows political tensions between the country's ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party and the Zanzibar-based CUF.
Those in the region are advised to exercise an increased level of situational awareness given a possible escalation of regional tension in the immediate to medium term. Monitor local media sources to remain cognisant of any related developments, such as the scheduling of any protests, which should be avoided to minimise exposure to crowd violence and police crowd control measures.
