Several Fatalities Following Shootout With Police Near Pinetown

02/19/2018 (South Africa) - According to local media sources on Monday, 19 February, five suspected criminals were shot dead in an exchange of fire with local police along the M13 road near Pinetown. All of the men are suspected to have been involved in a series of house robberies and were killed following a police car chase. Local emergency and security services are on the scene and are conducting operations.

Those in Pinetown are advised to avoid the vicinity of the incident due to the likelihood of further violence and ongoing operations. Travellers should monitor local media sources for any further information and heed any directives issued by the authorities. Crime presents a significant threat in Pinetown and nearby Durban and, although most prevalent in low-income areas, violent criminal activity poses a serious risk throughout the city and the surrounding area.
