02/18/2018 (Ethiopia) - According to media reports, the state of emergency declared in Thursday will remain in place for six months following a cabinet meeting on Saturday, 17 February. Initial reports indicated the action would only be in effect for three months. The measure includes a ban on protests and the dissemination of publications that could incite and sow discord. Furthermore, It will give law enforcement officers the power to detain anyone suspected of violating "the constitutional order" and the ability to search houses, cars and individuals, all without a court warrant. A previous state of emergency was in effect for 10 months until August 2017.
Those in Ethiopia are advised to monitor local media sources for further information and updates on the implementation of the state of emergency and any extraordinary security measures introduced under it. Travellers should minimise time spent in the vicinity of all demonstrations and political gatherings in Ethiopia due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, incidental violence and aggressive police crowd dispersal activities.
