02/18/2018 (Philippines) - According to local media reports on Sunday, 18 February, an attack by suspected Abu Sayyaf pirates was thwarted on Friday, 16 February, after crew members of the MV Kudos 1 poured boiling water and oil over the attackers as they attempted to board the vessel. The attempted hijacking reportedly occurred off the coast of Basilan and was carried out by militants in three motorboats. After their attack failed, sources report that the pirates opened fire on the vessel, injuring one crew member. Abu Sayyaf militants have kidnapped several foreign nationals for propaganda and ransom purposes over the past year.

Those operating in the Philippines' maritime domain are advised to continue to employ security measures commensurate to mitigating risks in a high threat maritime environment. Given the considerable threat from terrorism and associated kidnapping, travellers in the Sulu archipelago should remain extremely vigilant and maintain a low profile at all times. Vessels are advised to maintain anti-piracy watches and exercise vigilance at all times, especially during the late night or early morning hours when berthed at anchorages or ports as well as on local/regional voyages. Any suspicious activity should be reported to local authorities and the IMB piracy reporting centre.
