02/18/2018 (Thailand) - According to local media reports on Sunday, 18 February, a farmer has been shot dead in Yingo district, Narathiwat province, in an attack that may be linked to persistent insurgent activity in the area. The man was killed early on Sunday morning in a rubber plantation near his dwelling. Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Though foreign nationals are rarely targeted in insurgency-related attacks in southern Thailand, bystanders can be exposed to incidental violence due to the indiscriminate tactics used by the assailants. As such, travellers are advised to maintain good situational awareness and subject overland travel to comprehensive security measures. Any suspicious items or activity should immediately be reported to security forces. Travellers are further advised to monitor local media sources for updates.
