02/17/2018 (Afghanistan) - According to local media sources on Saturday, 17 February, a base used by militants from the Islamic State group (IS) has been destroyed in a drone attack carried out by US forces in the eastern province of Nangarhar. Reports state that the strike was carried out on Thursday, 15 February, by multiple unmanned aircraft in the Mamand area of Achin district. A spokesman from the 201st Silab Corps of the Afghan National Army (ANA) said that the strike had destroyed a known hideout of the militant group and had killed at least one terrorist.

Due to the presence of IS and Taliban militants and ongoing security operations, travel in Nangarhar province should be limited to operationally-critical deployments. Those in the province are advised to operate under the strictest possible security risk management measures in coordination with local authorities and a trusted security provider. Security procedures should be regularly reviewed and updated so as to remain commensurate with the evolving local threat environment.
