Former FARC Commander and Police Bodyguards Killed in Attack in Tibu, North Santander Department

02/16/2018 (Colombia) - According to local media on Thursday, 15 February, a former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) militant commander and two National Protection Unit (UNP) bodyguards have been killed in an armed attack on their vehicle in Tibu, North Santander department. UNP units have been tasked with protecting some ex-FARC members against revenge attacks following their demobilisation in February 2017.
Those in the vicinity of Tibu are advised to remain highly vigilant due to ongoing police operations. Travellers should monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and possible associated unrest. Those conducting travel outside of major cities in Colombia are advised to subject all journeys to a comprehensive localised threat assessment and liaise with local authorities to identify areas with active guerrilla and security operations.
