Indian Army Post in Azad Kashmir Targeted in Retaliatory Pakistani Shelling; Fatalities Reported

02/16/2018 (Pakistan) - According to local media sources On Thursday, 15 February, at least five soldiers were killed and many others were injured after an Indian army post located in the Kotli district along the Line of Control (LOC) was shelled. It is indicated that the attack was perpetrated by Pakistani armed forces in retaliation for an attack against a school van near the village of Dharamsal in Poonch District earlier that day. The LOC area sees frequent cross-border skirmishes, often resulting in military and civilian casualties.
Travellers should avoid aforementioned areas in the immediate term due to the ongoing security operations and risk of further clashes. Those in Azad Kashmir are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of the border with India due to the military operations in the area. Travellers are advised to liaise with local security officials and trusted security providers to avoid zones deemed unstable or with active security operations. Contingency measures should also be continually reviewed and updated accordingly to remain commensurate to the local threat environment.
