02/16/2018 (Philippines) - According to local media, public transportation workers will hold demonstrations in front of Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) offices nationwide on Monday, 19 February, against plans to modernise public utility vehicles (PUVs). There are approximately 200,000 PUVs operating in the Philippines, known locally as Jeepneys, and they will have to pass new emissions and roadworthiness standards. Government authorities have announced that additional transport will be provided to alleviate travel disruption during the demonstrations.

Disruption to public transport services are likely during the demonstrations and clients should also be aware of a surge in demand for alternative means of transport. Clients are advised to revise journey plans accordingly in order to minimise disruption and impact on business continuity. Travellers are further advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of any associated protests or demonstrations due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, opportunistic crime, and heavy-handed police response. Monitor local media sources for further updates.
