02/16/2018 (Sudan) - The US Embassy in Khartoum as of Thursday, 15 February informs of an intense police crackdown on political activists and highlights the harsh detention conditions experienced by those arrested over the last months; reportedly hundreds. Such conditions include arrests without charge or trial and solitary confinement in many cases. In parallel to this, related demonstrations continue in Khartoum often being met by heavy-handed police response. Reports indicate that in the last two months, at least five significant demonstrations have been held in the capital.

Travellers are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings in Sudan due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and heavy-handed crowd control operations. If a planned or spontaneous protest or gathering occurs in a client's area of operations, travellers should seek to vacate the area immediately. Travellers are further advised to monitor local media sources for updates on the current unrest.
