02/16/2018 (Egypt) - According to international media reports on Friday, 16 February, significant unrest is anticipated in Cairo and nationwide ahead of the upcoming Presidential elections, scheduled to be held on 26 and 28 March 2018. Incumbent President el-Sisi is accused of running an undemocratic election after a number of his critics were arrested, and his rival candidates withdrew from the race following intimidation. Protests and election-related violence may occur throughout the election process and following the announcement of results in April or May.

Travellers are advised to limit time spent in the vicinity of government buildings and electoral infrastructure during the electoral period. Clients in urban centres, particularly in Cairo, are advised to avoid the vicinity of all protests and political gatherings due to the risk of incidental violence and opportunistic crime as well as aggressive police crowd dispersal tactics. Travellers should monitor local media sources for any further information and heed any directives issued by the authorities.
