02/16/2018 (Ethiopia) - According to the US Embassy in Addis Ababa on Friday, 16 February, unrest is anticipated in major urban centres nationwide, particularly in the Oromia and Amhara regions, following yesterday's resignation of Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. Large demonstrations and strikes may continue in urban centres and additional security measures are likely to be in place. The embassy has temporarily suspended all travel outside of Addis Ababa for embassy personnel as a precautionary measure.

Clients in Ethiopia are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of all demonstrations and political gatherings, particularly in Oromia and Amhara regions, in order to limit exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence, as well as a heavy-handed police response. Travellers are further advised to be wary of a heightened police presence in urban centres in the medium term and should heed any directives issued by authorities, including curfews. Monitor local media sources for updates on planned protests.
