02/16/2018 (India) - According to the United States Consulate General in Chennai on Friday, 16 February, unrest is anticipated in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, following the Supreme Court's verdict in a high profile case regarding a dispute over the sharing of Cauvery River water. Previous decisions on the matter have resulted in sporadic protests and violent unrest. As a precautionary measure, heightened security measures are in place in Tamil Nadu, Bengaluru, and Mysuru. Some public and commercial services are also reportedly affected, and many public bus services between Bangalore and Chennai have been suspended.

Clients in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of all demonstrations and political gatherings in order to limit exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence, as well as a heavy-handed police response. Travellers are further advised to be wary of a heightened police presence in urban centres in the medium term and should heed any directives issued by authorities, including curfews. Monitor local media sources for updates on planned protests.
