02/15/2018 (Afghanistan) - According to local sources, Thursday, 15 February, gatherings and commemorative events are expected in Kabul and other urban centres linked to the celebration of Liberation Day, a public holiday marking the anniversary of the day Soviet troops completed their withdrawal from the country in 1989. Government offices will be closed on the day. Heightened security measures will be in place in the form of an increased security force presence and additional checkpoints.

Clients in Kabul on 15 February are advised to avoid the vicinity of large gatherings in order to lessen the chances of being affected by incidental violence and opportunistic crime. Travellers are reminded that Afghanistan remains an extreme-risk operational environment, and deployments should only be undertaken with the strictest possible security procedures and journey management protocols in place. Clients should use a reputable security provider that offers close protection and emergency response services.
