02/15/2018 (Russia) - According to local media sources on Thursday, 15 February, counter-terrorist operations are ongoing in the mountainous district of Untsukul in Dagestan. As recent security operations in the region have shown, it is likely that the security forces have implemented checkpoints on the perimeter of the district as well as putting certain areas on lockdown for the duration of the operations. There have been increasing concerns over the threat from terrorism in Russia in recent years, particularly connected to the country's operations against IS militants in Syria and the potential radicalisation of Russian Muslims.
Those in Dagestan are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on any associated security operations. Due to the elevated threat from terrorism in Russia, travellers in the country should exercise a heightened level of vigilance and immediately report any suspicious items or activity to security forces.
