French Forces Target Militants in Tinzaouaten, close to the Algerian Border

02/15/2018 (Algeria) - According to local media sources on Thursday, 15 February, French forces with Operation Barkhane have reportedly carried out a land assault against militants in Tinzaouaten, close to the Algerian border. It is reported that at least ten militants were killed in the operation, French forces recovered multiple weapons and ammunition. France currently has 4,000 troops deployed in the Sahel region as part of Operation Barkhane.
Those with operationally-critical travel requirements in northern Mali and southern Algeria should first conduct a thorough localised threat assessment and subject all movement to stringent security risk management procedures. Travellers are advised to liaise with security forces and local authorities to identify and avoid areas with ongoing unrest of protests in the region. Contingency measures should be continually reviewed and updated so as to remain commensurate with the local threat environment.
