02/15/2018 (Brazil) - According to local media reports on Thursday, 15 February, multiple families have reportedly been forced out of their houses in the Jesuitas district of Santa Cruz, 65km (40 miles) west of Rio de Janeiro. Sources indicate that criminal groups with a strong presence in the area have been taking control of public-funded social housing projects destined to impoverished populations in the area. Over 10,000 residents of these projects have been significantly affected by criminal activities in the area.

Those in Rio de Janeiro are advised to exercise a heightened level of situational awareness due to the threat from criminal activity, avoiding high crime areas and ostentatious displays of wealth. If targeted, travellers should avoid offering resistance as such reactions may result in the use of force. Any suspicious activity should be reported to police.
