02/14/2018 (Indonesia) - According to regional media outlets on Wednesday, 14 February, an Indonesian soldier was reportedly shot and killed by West Papua National Liberation Army (TPN-OPM) militants in the Puncak Jaya Regency of Papua Province. It is indicated that the soldier was part of a patrol force who came under fire at a market near Sinak. The separatist TPN-OPM group is engaged in a violent campaign to gain sovereignty for the region.

The incident underlines the necessity of maintaining strict security management protocols when deployed in higher-risk, rural environments in Indonesia's more restive provinces. Travellers are advised to liaise with local security officials and trusted security providers to avoid zones deemed unstable or with active security operations. Contingency measures should also be continually reviewed and updated accordingly so as to remain commensurate with the local threat environment.
