02/14/2018 (Nigeria) - According to local media sources on Wednesday, 14 February, at least 23 people were killed after a bus carrying schoolchildren collided with a truck near Gaya town in Kano State. It is indicated that driver of the bus lost control when he swerved to avoid a pothole and collided head-first with an oncoming truck. The bus was reportedly travelling from the Misau local government area of Bauchi state towards Kano city when the incident occurred.
This incident highlights the dangers associated with overland travel in Nigeria. Roads are generally in poor condition and lack stop signs, street lights and functional traffic lights. Local motorists tend to drive recklessly and at excessive speeds and often refuse to yield the right-of-way to other drivers or pedestrians. Public transportation should also be avoided while in Nigeria. Buses are typically overcrowded, poorly maintained and often targeted by criminals. Those intending to conduct overland travel are advised to ensure that they utilise the services of a reputable service provider, checking safety standards and vehicle serviceability.
