02/14/2018 (Egypt) - According to emerging social media feeds on Wednesday, 14 February, widespread military operations under the 'Comprehensive Operation - Sinai 2018' continue in the North Sinai governorate in an attempt to eradicate the insurgency. In the meantime, reports indicate the closure of multiple roads, the indefinite suspension of activities in schools and universities as well as problems with the supply of goods. In addition, reports indicate that military personnel are withdrawing mobile phones and tablets from the civilian population.
Due to the ongoing military operations, travellers should minimise non-essential movement in North Sinai governorate in the immediate term. Islamist militancy remains a significant threat throughout the area. Those with operationally-critical travel requirements in the region should subject all movement to a location-specific threat assessment and strict security risk management procedures. Travellers should monitor local media sources for security-related updates and minimise time spent in the vicinity of security operations, military patrols and positions, as these are regularly targeted in attacks.
