02/14/2018 (Libya) - According to international media reports on Wednesday, 14 February, 25 people have been killed and up to 79 others have been injured following a traffic collision near Bani Walid, 150km (93 miles) southeast of Tripoli. The location is a known hub for smugglers transporting sub-Saharan migrants, and the majority of fatalities in the incident were reportedly Somali and Eritrean migrants. Further details regarding the circumstances of the crash are currently unknown.

Travellers should expect overland travel disruption in the immediate vicinity of the incident. Vehicular accidents are relatively frequent in the country due to inadequate road maintenance in rural areas and limited enforcement of traffic rules. Those intending to conduct overland travel are advised to ensure that they utilise the services of a reputable service provider, checking safety standards and vehicle serviceability. Clients are reminded that Libya is an extreme risk operational environment and should reconsider all non-essential movement outside of secure compounds given the current instability and conflict situation. Remain vigilant at all times and monitor local media for situational updates.
