Anti-Government Protests in Pantoja, Santa Domingo Province; Travel Disruptions and Roadblocks Reported

02/13/2018 (Dominican Republic) - According to social media sources on Monday, 12 February, residents of the Pantoja community, Santa Domingo province, are protesting against the poor infrastructure in their community. Social media images should a number of roadblocks constructed from burning tires and there are reports of police attempting to disperse the protesters with tear gas. Public transportation is also reportedly disrupted in the community due to an associated strike of transportation workers.

Clients in Pantoja are advised to avoid all unnecessary travel in the immediate term due to ongoing protests and roadblocks. Travellers are advised to avoid all political protests to mitigate against incidental violence, opportunistic crime and a possible heavy-handed police response. Do not attempt to cross any roadblocks as this may provoke protesters. Monitor local media for updates on localised protests in the region and associated travel disruption.
