02/13/2018 (Mexico) - According to local media on Tuesday, 13 February, thousands of protesters are marching towards the residence of the President of Mexico in the centre of Mexico City, known locally as Los Pinos. The protest march began earlier in the day in Ocoyoacac and La Marquesa, Mexico state, and protesters are marching against the construction of a Mexico-Toluca train line, which they allege will degrade water quality along the route. Social media images show approach roads to Mexico City blocked by protesters. Security forces have reportedly erected fences to prevent protesters from reaching Los Pinos.
Clients in Mexico City should avoid the vicinity of Los Pinos in the immediate term due to the ongoing protests. Travellers are advised to avoid all political protests to mitigate against incidental violence, opportunistic crime and a possible heavy-handed police response. Monitor local media for updates on the protest route and associated travel disruption.
