02/13/2018 (Sudan) - According to the US Embassy in Khartoum, a series of anti-austerity demonstrations are expected to occur in Khartoum, Khartoum North, and Omdurman on Tuesday, 13 February. Reports indicate that protesters are expected to gather in the city centres from 1500hrs (1300 UTC). Recent wide-scale protests against government austerity measures have garnered a large attendance and have received a heavy-handed response from security forces. Related protests have also occurred in recent weeks in Medani, Singa, Gazira State, and Zalinge, Central Darfur; further spontaneous protests may occur in these locations.

Travellers are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings in Sudan due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and heavy-handed crowd control operations. If a planned or spontaneous protest or gathering occurs in a client's area of operations, travellers should seek to vacate the area immediately. Travellers are further advised to monitor local media sources for updates on the current unrest.
