Police Clash with Striking Prison Guards at Fleury-Merogis Prison; Protests ongoing

01/19/2018 (France) - According to international media sources on Friday, 19 January, striking prison guards at Fleury-Merogis jail on the southern outskirts of Paris have clashed with police during nationwide protests over attacks on staff. The clashes occurred in the early morning as striking guards built a barricade to prevent other staff crossing their picket line. Security forces broke through the picket line after firing tear gas to disperse protestors. The clashes come on the fourth day of the strikes, which are ongoing.
Clients in Paris are advised to avoid the vicinity of the Fleury-Merogis prison or any other large political gatherings in order to lessen the chances of being affected by incidental violence and consequent security operations.
