01/19/2018 (Germany) - International sources on Friday, 19 January report that Storm Friederike caused significant damage overnight, resulting in eight deaths in the region. The northwest of the country was worst affected, with lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Westfalia hit particularly hard. 65,000 homes are reportedly without power and many schools have been closed. Regional train services are restarting after they were suspended overnight, but significant disruption is expected. A number of roads in the northwest of the country remain closed due to fallen trees and debris. The storm had earlier caused disruption in the Netherlands, where Schipol (AMS) airport was briefly closed due to high winds.

Those in the region are advised to monitor local media sources for further weather-related updates and heed any directives issued by local authorities. Travellers should anticipate a weather-related disruption in the area in the immediate to medium term and should factor this into itineraries, allowing additional time and planning alternative routes where possible. Ensure vehicles are well maintained and drive with caution, contact airline providers before heading to the airport and expect train and tram cancellations.
