Clashes Reported in Pulwama Following Grenade Attack, Cross-Border Fire Kills Two on Line of Control

01/19/2018 (India) - According to local media reports on Friday, 19 January, clashes between security force and protestors broke out following an earlier grenade attack in Pulwama town, Kashmir. Security forces reportedly cordoned off the area of the blast and were met with stone-throwing protestors. Sources report that police fired tear gas to disperse the protests. Elsewhere in Kashmir, cross-border fire reportedly killed two Indian citizens in Jammu district. The shots were reported to have begun at 0600 local time (0300 UTC). A number of ceasefire violations have been reported recently on both sides of the border.

Those in Jammu and Kashmir state are advised to avoid these areas in the immediate term due to the possibility of ongoing security operations, heeding any directives issued by security forces. Those in the area should be aware of the potential for unrest during and following the operation. Travellers should monitor local media sources for further updates on the operation and observe any extraordinary security measures which may be implemented, including curfews.
