01/19/2018 (South Africa) - According to local media reports on Friday, 19 January, five women were shot in an attack in Benoni on the eastern suburbs of Johannesburg. The attack reportedly occurred at around 2030 local time (UTC) on Thursday, 18 January, with two suspects approaching the women and opening fire. The attack is suspected to be linked to an incident on January 14, when the bodies of seven suspected illegal miners were discovered in Benoni.

Those in the area are advised to exercise a heightened level of vigilance and minimise time spent in the vicinity of the incident. Travellers should be aware that crime rates are high in Johannesburg and, although most prevalent in low-income areas, violent criminal activity poses a serious risk throughout the city and the surrounding area. Those in Johannesburg and other parts of South Africa are advised to follow strict security measures to mitigate the risk of exposure to criminal activity.
