01/19/2018 (Pakistan) - According to local sources on Friday, 19 January, a grenade attack has caused at least one fatality and multiple injuries in Kharadar market, Karachi. Authorities reportedly suspect the attack was the work of criminal gangs and was carried out on a business that was refusing to pay extortion money. The attack caused panic in the market, with many shops closing for several hours. Police cordoned off the site of the blast to collect area and defuse any remaining explosive material. The market is one of the city's busiest trading centres.

Those in Karachi are advised to monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and associated security operations. Due to the ongoing risk of terrorist attacks and sectarian violence, travellers should minimise non-essential travel in crowded areas in Karachi and those associated with foreign interests, including markets, restaurants and places of worship which may be targeted in attacks. All travel in the region should be subject to a comprehensive risk assessment and undertaken in coordination with a trusted security provider.
